Lip reading is a real thing:

Although studies show that only about 30 to 45 percent of the English language can be understood through lip reading alone, Lip reading can often assist speech understanding. Adding visual signals provides the greatest chance for success in conversations, and increases one's confidence in their ability to communicate.

While real-world experience is the best tool at a lip reading learner’s disposal, systemic teaching plus constant and focused training can certainly boost the skills. In Lip Reading Academy, students are taught to watch the lips, tongue and jaw movements, and to use their ability to deduce. Lip reading lessons have been shown to be of benefit in UK studies commissioned by the Action on Hearing Loss charity.

--------------------------

Lip reading benefits everyone:

As hearing becomes more and more difficult in old age, people may tend to depend more on lip reading, and are certainly encouraged to do so. Although lip reading is normally used most extensively by deaf and hard-of-hearing people, most people with proper hearing process speech information to a varied degree from sight of the moving mouth.

For people with normal hearing, adding sight of the movement of the mouth improves speech processing. Being able to lip-read makes both the speaker and listener better communicators. Also, if you have a friend or family member who is hard-of-hearing, being able to lip-read can provide insights into what they are going through and make you more aware when speaking.

--------------------------

In conclusion, lip reading is a very useful skill which benefits all of us in our daily lives. Its mastery requires A LOT OF time and patience, but the more you consciously practice, the easier and more natural it becomes.

I wish you a lot of fun and success learning with Lip Reading Academy.

Simple, friendly app without obtrusive ads or other dark patterns. The free version already allows for a lot of practice and I find the full version very reasonably priced, especially for something rather niche. I don't even have a disability, I only want to improve my ability to "hear" in loud environments, and I still feel like I very much got my money's worth.

A nice app, but the words are spoken in an accent different than how I speak/typically hear, so I found myself relying on memorization to correctly read how certain words appear with this particular accent. For example, letters like R and O read very differently than I'm used to, so "work" looks identical to "wake" for me. I only made it through most of the consonant/vowel levels, not sure how the others work, but a wider range of words would also be helpful so there's not as much repetition.

Update in reply: This is not the only review that has stated the person has an accent. Again, you have to rely on memory for those lessons. I have the newest device out right now, samsung galaxy s23 ultra, so if there is a compatibility problem it's on your end to update. Doesn't matter anymore I've uninstalled. Pronunciation different in many words so memorization is required which defeats the purpose. Some videos don't load so you have to guess and get it wrong to move to the next video.

It is very well done and simple to use, free and also no ads every 5 minutes, though I am still at level 4. It is well paced though, I would recommend there be more random options or increase the options to choose the correct answer to make it harder. As I feel I am exercising my memory more than I am reading lips to get the right answer.

Thank you to the creators of the app for responding to my earlier review about the error on level 11. I'm really enjoying this app so far, consonants seem to be easy so far. I have hearing loss and although I lipread to a degree, I've lost my edge since pandemic started and I've worked from home, I look forward to reaching the sentences!

Great tool but I wish it had a native English speaker. And regardless of the type of speaker, their should be more than just one so that we aren't getting accustomed to any accents or that any one person may carry. And the GUI and its presentation has room for improvement.

It very good but it didn't say about trick words. Like when the man does the word "Listen" He goes, "listen slowly, listen carefully". It can really throw you off if you don't pay attention closely. That why the 4 stars.

I am 16 and ymearlier this year I have been diagnosed as hearing impaired, and was recommended hearing aids. I couldn't wear them with my glasses so I turned to lip reading recently. so far I haven't seen any other app like this, and this app has helped me so much in recognising speech patterns in words to improve my social life. I can't express my gratitude of this app with a payment, but I love this app, and would like to thank you so much for making it. there's no ads as well 10/10👌
