These ancient breeds of hyenas are thought to be extinct, as canines became more widespread and more successful than hyenas during the Pliocene epoch. Today, only four hyena species have survived.

The most important common feature of hyenas is that their front legs are longer than their hind legs. They do not have the ability to retract their nails like felines.
